Do you ever have that feeling? That you look at your life and think: ‘Is this it?’ You are constantly running around, and at the end of the day you are exhausted, but not satisfied.

Your days are filled with to-do lists that, in retrospect, seem so pointless. What did you do in the end? Where did you really make a difference?

Being meaningful

This sense of meaninglessness often stems from a desire to be meaningful to those around you. You want to leave your mark on the world, to contribute.

Singer Bram Vermeulen expressed this feeling very well in his Dutch song ‘De Steen’ (The Stone):

I have moved a stone in a river on earth
The water flows differently than before
You cannot stop the flow of a river
The water always finds a way around

Maybe once filled with snow and rain
The river takes my pebble with it
And then smooth and rounded worn
To let it rest in the lee of the sea

I have moved a stone in a river on earth
Now I know I will never be forgotten
I gave proof of my existence
Because, by shifting that one stone
The water will never go the same way

Childhood Beliefs

Sometimes a feeling of dissatisfaction can creep up on you. You have the idea that you don’t fit in and are looking for satisfaction and zest for life.

You have the feeling that you are drained by the daily grind, but do not know how to change this. This is where Transactional Analysis (TA) can help.

With TA you will gain insight into the patterns and beliefs you have inherited from your childhood. These patterns were useful in your youth, but now that you’re an adult, they can be a hindrance.

I experienced this myself when I was only 18 years old. I came from a Catholic family and at home my father was always right.

When I went to university, I came into contact with TA through a women’s group. I remember very well the moment I realised: ‘I am allowed to think about what I want in my life’. I didn’t have to conform to what I had been taught at home. That was a revelation and a relief for me.

Now that I think about it, I didn’t have a big mission to make a difference, but that realisation came soon after.

Being true to yourself gives real satisfaction

There are many people who, during the pandemic, have realised that they want things to be different. We become more specific in the choices we make. Maybe you don’t like your job. Maybe you don’t want such a full schedule anymore. Maybe you want to focus on things that really matter.

It is important to be true to yourself. You must follow your mission. If deep down inside you feel like you’re in the wrong place or not well trained, now is the time to change that.
